Setting Sun VB is at 4878 Princess Anne Rd. Suite 105 in Virginia Beach — about 35 to 45 minutes from most of Newport News, depending on tunnel traffic. It is the closest dedicated mahjong parlor, board game café, and Beyblade tournament venue to the Peninsula.
The straightforward route is I-64 east through the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT), continuing through Norfolk to I-264 east, then exit at Witchduck Road and south on Princess Anne. Tunnel timing matters — late-morning weekends and after 7 PM weekdays tend to be smoothest. Avoid 4–6 PM weekday HRBT runs if you can.
Many of our regulars come from Newport News, Hampton, and the rest of the Peninsula specifically for the monthly Riichi tournaments and Friday fighting game nights — both are events you cannot find on the Peninsula at all. Building a visit around a tournament or workshop makes the drive feel like a small road trip rather than a commute.
Newport News Visitor FAQ
For Peninsula players sizing up whether the trip is worth it.
Is there mahjong on the Peninsula or in Newport News?+
No dedicated mahjong venue in Newport News, Hampton, or the rest of the Peninsula currently. Setting Sun VB in Virginia Beach is the closest, with automated tables and a regular community.
Is the HRBT going to ruin the drive?+
Only if you time it badly. Late-morning weekends, evenings after 7 PM weekdays, and Sunday mid-day are usually smooth. Weekday 4–6 PM eastbound is when it gets ugly.
What events are worth building a trip around?+
The monthly Riichi Mahjong tournament (ARA-certified), the monthly WBO Beyblade tournament, and the URC (Ultimate Riichi Championship) — none of which exist anywhere else in Hampton Roads. Friday fighting game nights are also a strong draw if you compete.
Can I make a group visit?+
Yes. Private events for groups of 8+ are common, and we can put together a mahjong lesson + open play combo for visiting groups. Reach out through the contact page.
Where exactly is it?+
4878 Princess Anne Rd. Suite 105, Virginia Beach, VA 23462. Free parking on site, just south of I-264 near the Norfolk–Virginia Beach line.
